It was an idea of my father's that if anyone else was to get the role of Sherlock Holmes, it should be Hugh Laurie.

House is based Sherlock, who is(in part) based on Dr. Joseph Bell, who was the subject of the book House got for Christmas that Wilson made up a story involving House falling for a patient named Irene Adler in the episode "Joy to the World".

Did you know that Hughs' character DR House's address is 221B Baker street, same as Sherlock Holmes? someone on the show must have had the same thought as you and your Dad!
